On December 8th this year, RTRI and the Institute of Industrial Science of the Univ. of Tokyo, or IIS, concluded an agreement to promote cooperation between the two organizations.

Purpose of the agreement

Under this agreement, both organizations aim to contribute to the development of science and technologies in Japan, in particular, railways and transportation technologies through sharing their research capabilities and resources and cooperating in exchange and development of the next-generation human resources as well as in practical and advanced research and development.

Background of the agreement

IIS is one of the largest in-campus research institutes in Japan. It has been developing state-of-the-art and practical science and technologies through the research activities covering almost every field of engineering and part of fundamental science. In addition, it has been actively promoting research collaborations with researchers in and out of the institute.

RTRI was launched as an organization to take over the research and development of the Japanese National Railways, and has been promoting a broad spectrum of activities including developing railway technical standards and reviewing international railway standards, as well as multidisciplinary research and development in cooperation with the national government, railway operators, and industries.

Since railway technologies are supported by a wide-ranging research fields such as mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering and human science, extensive scientific expertise covering from basics to applications are required to advance the research. Due to this reason, ISS and RTRI have already been cooperating in joint research projects, personnel exchange programs, and a number of scientific committee activities. This comprehensive agreement for cooperation was concluded with the aim of enhancing the research outcome and of further promoting human resources exchange and development through deepening this collaborative tie.

Research fields for collaboration

In this collaboration, IIS and RTRI will focus particularly on advanced simulation and communications network, safety, energy efficiency, speed increase, and functional materials, among the wide-spanning technologies supporting railways which are basic social infrastructure.

Outline of the agreement

1. Cooperation in joint research projects
  - Effectively utilize resources through sharing research facilities and equipment
2. Cooperation in personnel exchange
  - Promote science and technologies through exchanging personnel for future research
3. Cooperation in human resources development
  - Promote science and technologies through developing the future-generation human resources
4. Cooperation in other activities necessary to achieve the goal of this agreement
  - Co-host seminars and symposiums on a regular basis
