Fundamental Study of Synthetic Gear Lubricant for High-Speed Shinkansen Cars
Yasutomo SONE, Kiyoshi TANAKA
Fitness of synthetic oil as a base oil of gear lubricant used in the gear box of
high-speed Shinkansen cars was investigated. Taking the stability at high temperature
into consideration, polyalphaolefin (PAO) was selected as a test oil. Some properties
were tested in the laboratory. As a result of experiments, thermal stability and oxidation
stability were found to be better than those of conventional mineral base oil. Lubrication
properties are almost the same. Consequently, PAO was proposed to be a good base oil for
the gear lubricant.
