Global Environment and Civilization of Tomorrow

Saburo KATO
Predictably, the 21st Century holds in store ever-aggravating global environmental problems with population explosion, urban sprawl and advance of economic society based on high technology. The bottom line is that human society of the 21st century will be threatened with instability of food supply as a result of climate change, deterioration of environment, shortage of safe drinking water, massive growth of refugees; rampant outbreak of terrorist violence and social insecurity.
Faced with such a state of things, people will be compelled to ponder of what was the 20th century all about; particularly people will be concerned about the sustainability of human society. All the people including U.N.agencies, individual states, local anthorities and enterprises must cope with the stark reality and they put emphasis on change of values, transformation of systems and significance of technologies.
