Psychological Analysis on Visually Handicapped Persons' Falling from Railway Platform

A case study of visually handicapped persons' falling from the railway platforms is conducted. The number of interviewees and analyzed cases are 15 and 38 respectively. This research reveals that ; (1) 89% fall while moving along the platform; (2) walking distance before the fall is less than 20m in 70% cases; (3) 47% fall while using a white cane on the platform paved with textured blocs; (4) typical causes are (a) inappropriately designed or laid blocks, (b) victims' overhabituation, (c) taking a wrong direction by hitting something on the platform, (d) simple mistake, and (e) exhaustion of attentional resources; (5) 58% persons are helped back to the platform after falls (not by themselves); (6) 16% persons are wounded worse than a bone fracture. Finally, comments are given on various present countermeasures and future directions are discussed.
