In order to ensure the safety of train operation during the snowmelt season, it is required to develop a simple method for estimating the snowmelt amount accurately. The degree-day method is most practical procedure for the snowmelt calculation for a week or longer. In this study the applicability of degree-day method to the estimation of the daily amount of snowmelt was discussed on the basis of the data obtained from snowmelt observations. Consequently, considerable success was attained in the improvement of this method, which permitted the estimation of the daily amount of snowmelt by using the air temperature alone.
