Running Energy of Shinkansen Trains

Tenko FUKUDA,  Tomoki WATANABE

Environmental protection is one of the most important global issues in recent years. To discuss a measure to decrease the emission of carbon dioxide, a principal cause of the greenhouse effect, we simulated the emission of carbon dioxide in terms of running energy of the series 300 and 700 Shinkansen trains that ran between 515km-apart stations. As a result, we found that the emission of carbon dioxide would decrease 6% from the present level, if we could reduce the air resistance of trains by 10%. This paper reports the simulation results and a method to decrease the emission of carbon dioxide.
