To improve vibration damping properties and workability of installation of vibration dampers onto steel objects such as railway steel bridges, the authors have developed a magnetic rubber damper with a constraining layer (MRDC), which consists of a constraining steel layer and a magnetic rubber layer. In this paper, the damping property of MRDC installed onto the web plates of steel railway bridges is discussed. An equation to calculate the decrease of vibration of the bridge web plates due to the installation of MRDC is derived based on a proposed theory of bending vibration of plate. The calculated results have been compared with the date measured at a through-plate girder type of the railway steel bridge.
