The conventional types of displacement transducers are often used in the tests to measure the displacement of models. By this method, however, it is impossible to evaluate two-dimensional deformation such as the strain distribution of the soil structure. In this study, therefore, a new image processing system using CCD cameras was established to make it possible to evaluate the deformation characteristics of models quantitatively in both static and dynamic tests. Experiments revealed that the mobilization of the earth pressure acting on retaining walls was strongly governed by the seismic behavior of the soil structure and the formation of failure plane.
