Development of an Automatic Tuning Dynamic Damper for Railway Vehicle

Kimiaki SASAKI,  Shougo KAMOSITA,  Yoshiki SUGAHARA

High-speed train operation requires lightweight vehicles. However, the carbody of such vehicles is often subjected to bending vibrations. Although adoption of dynamic dampers is a solution to this problem, they are heavy and require exact tuning of their parameters. This paper describes a lightweight dynamic damper system of the automatic tuning type to aim at reducing bending vibration of carbody. To realize this system, a variable spring and an electrical damping equipment developed and tested. In running tests of a train equipped with this damper, it was shown that the vertical vibration of carbody was reduced by 40%.
