This paper presents an experimental study to examine the deformation properties of ballasted track during earthquake. A series of shaking table tests were performed for two types of single grained crushed stone. One is railroad ballast, and the other is single grained crushed stone having a grain size distribution similar to that of railroad ballast. Based on the results of these tests, the development of residual settlement of railroad ballast during earthquake is quantitatively evaluated associated with the observed movement of ballast particles inside railroad ballast.
