Piezoelectric elements, which are electrically connected to external shunt circuits, are introduced to suppress bending vibration of railway vehicles. Two types of shunt circuits are used. One is equivalent to an inductor and a resistor in series, and the other a negative capacitor and a resistor. Excitation tests are carried out by using a 1/5 scalemodel of Shinkansen. The test results show that the first mode bending vibration of the carbody can be suppressed successfully with these two circuits. Moreover, the circuit including a negative capacitor can also reduce vibration associated with higher eigen modes.
