The Vehicle Research Group, RTRI, is now promoting researches on various subjects to improve the performance of railway vehicles in service. This paper introduces the current status and several important points of the development activities at the Vehicles Structure Technology Division, RTRI, such as the researches on the suppression of flexural vibration of carbody, studies to suppress vertical vibration of railway vehicles by controlling the force of axle dampers, a guideline to prevent fatigue damage of bogie frames, ultrasonic crack detection for hollow axles of conventional railway vehicles.
