For the purpose of the comprehension of the environmental burden caused by transport modes in Japan, we performed inventory analysis of each mode of transport every five years from 1985 to 2000 by Input-output method. We evaluated Co2, NOx, and SOx emissions from railways, road traffic, aviation and coastal shipping considering the following factors: the construction and the maintenance of infrastructures, the production and the maintenance of vehicles, and the supply and the consumption of operation energy. As a result, it was evident that the environmental burden per unit traffic by railways is lower than that by other transport modes. It was also apparent that 20-60 percent of the total CO2 emission from each transport mode was caused from the factors of infrastructures and the vehicles.
