The authors are Promoting research and development of the two types of high
performance and high speed (maximum speed 350km/h range) Shinkansen trucks
for the next generation: one is the improved type of the Shinkansen bolsterless
trucks already in use and the other is the higher performance Shinkansen trucks
with body mounted traction motors and braking equipments. This latter truck is
designed on such principle that reduction of truck sprung and unsprung mass by
introducing ca-body-mounted traction motors and disc brake gears contributes
to improve running stability and ride quality, while avoiding any increase of
total truck mass. Tests on the roller rig have confirmed it is possible to
improve greatly the high speed running stability of these trucks. At present,
the RTRI is pushing ahead with development of truck components as well as the
practical version of the prototype trucks.
