With speed up of a train, aerodynamic phenomena become remarkable including an aerodynamic drag, a train draft, a pressure pulse by an opposing train, an aerodynamic force due to a cross-wind, a pressure change in a tunnel, and a micro-pressure wave radiating from the tunnel exit. For speed up of a train, it is necessary to reduce these aerodynamic phenomena. We paid attention to the aerodynamic drag in these phenomena. We estimated the aerodynamic drag of a high speed experimental train (STAR21), compared it with the aerodynamic drag of the Series 200 train, and made wind tunnel tests to investigate the effect of an improved under belly of the vehicle.
