The Basic Friction and Wear Characteristics of Brake Disks and Linings in Train
Brakes on the Narrow-Gage Lines

Cast iron disk has been used in train brakes since 1953 in Japan. However there
were some problems of wear resistance and heat cracks about it. So other kinds of
disk materials have been sought from 1975. Lining materials are changed from
asbestos composite to non-asbestos composite in 1990. Recently a variety of disks
and linings are in use. It is important to estimate friction and wear characteristics
of some kinds of disks and linings.
In this study we made high speed friction tests and bench tests under combinations
of different disks and linings and examined their basic friction and wear characteristics.
