Characteristics of Compaction and Settlement on Railroad Ballast
Makoto SUNAGA, Hisamitsu IKEUCHI
The compaction of ballast has been performed on ballasted tracks, but the cmpaction
index has not been established, although there is a concept that the ballast must
be well compacted in order to reduce the settlement of tracks. The effect of compaction
work can not be quantitativity and the mechanism has not been understood.
This report presents the characteristics of compaction and settlement on ballast
which is compacted by MTT (Multiple Tie Tamper) and DTS (Dynamic Track Stabilizer),
and the fracture of ballast particles induced by the MTT.
