Investigation on Railroad Ballast in Europe and U.S.A.

The author investigated on railroad ballast in Europe and U.S.A. on October, 1994
in order to clarify the characteristics of ballast and improve the maintenance work
of ballast track.
Subjects of this investigation on railroad ballast are as follows:
1. Ballast specications (strength, toughness, gradation, particle shape, crushed
resistance and so on)
2. Specificaitons of ballast tamping
3. Relationship between ballast tamping and degradation
4. The mechanism of ballast settlement
5. Ballst settlement influenced the gradation and the shape of perticle and so on
