Development of Brake System on Vehicles running through Shinkansen line and
non-Shinkansen line

Railway rolling stocks that run over Shinkansen line and non-Shinkansen line need to
change the brake system on the boundary point between Shinkansen and non-Shinkansen
lines. We have developed an automatic changing system of brake while running. This
system will be able to prevent human error when changing the brake system without
stopping for the purpose. Brake system is changed on signals from the ground via a
signal equipment. The new system prevents errors in signals from checking the receiving
signals against the transmitted signals. When the two signals do not agree, the system
stops the train by emergency braking to secure safety. It was confirmed that the brake
system can be changed within 100ms of switching in the running tests simulating Kyushu
Shinkansen. The system can be applied for other purposes, for instance, power running,
between Shinkansen and non-Shinkansen lines.
