Reduction of Catenary Vibration in High-speed Running

Mitsuo ABOSHI, Issei NAKAI
In order to investigate into the relations between contact loss and catenary vibration, and to work out effective method of high-speed running, computer simulation, fundamental experiments on current collection testing equipment, and field tests on commercial lines have been carried out. From the results thereof, it is confirmed that contact force between contact wire and pantograph comes under the influence of catenary vibration (to be exact, wave motion incident on pantograph),and reduction of catenary vibration by using means such as damping hangers, damping wires, is effective for suppressing contact loss. It is expected that research and development in the future will contribute to improving the durability of line hardware and simplification of catenary systems.
