Development of the Index for Estimating Passenger Flow in the Station

There was not any index indicating the state of the passenger flow in the railway station, and we
used to make only a relative estimation. Then we have developed a unified index of the passenger
flow, in order to identify a station which calls for improvement, and to provide a desirable score
the station should aim at. We established passenger's physical burden due to the degree of congestion,
based on a walking experiment in the stations during rush hours using a stride-measuring instrument.
Thus we make it possible to quantitatively estimate the passenger movement, by means of calculating
the burden considering the walking condition, while at the same time simulating the passenger walk,
in addition to the existing prediction system for passenger flow.
