The conditions besetting the track maintenance work are getting more and more severe
in Japan recently, because of an increase in number of trains operated and noise issues
raised in connection with night work and so on. Therefore, an introduction of tracks
which require less maintenance work has been strongly demanded specially in urban areas.
A study session was held to argue on the track structures in RTRI in 1994. We have
reached the conclusion that the following types of track should be developed in future:
(1) low-construction cost type paved track
(2) low-maintenance type ballasted track with resilient ties
(3) 7 other tracks for example, grouted ballast track
