Development of Wheel Mounted Direct Drive Traction Motor

As one of technical topics which is talked about as NEXT250
(Narrow gauge EXpress Train for 250km/h) project in RTRI, we
are studing a direct drive traction motor system which is
mounted directly on the wheel. This is divided according to
the type of traction system into independent wheel drive type
and both-side wheels drive type. These direct drive systems
are expected to be simple in structure, lightweight, down-sized
and highly efficient compared with conventional indirect drive
system with flexible couplings and gears.
In this article, at first we discuss basic arrangement of
direct drive system, next introdece the result of a trial
manufacture, and lastly describe the permanent magnet synchronous
motor control system we are considering, together with the test result.
