Discrimination of Collapse Shape and Statistical Rainfall Risk Estimating Method for
the Deep Collapse of a Cut Slope

This paper deals with discrimination method between a surface collapse and a
deep one of cut slope, and risk estimation of the deep collapse of a cut slope
during heavy rainfall using a multivariate analysis. The critical rainfall is
given by multiplying an accumulated rainfall by an hourly one, which have the
powers 0.4 and 0.2 respectively. It was found that the accumulated rainfall
has a larger influence than the hourly rainfall on the deep collapse of cut
slopes.
Since it is comfirmed that this risk estimation standard agrees with some
values observed with the deep collapses, it is suggested that the method be
used not only for planning the disaster prevention along railway right-of-way
but also for predicting the cut slope collapse due to heavy rainfall.
