In case of building an embankment, the compaction level is managed in terms of K30-value obtained from the plate loading test. The minimum K30-value of an embankment is 68.6MPa/m. But even if K30-value is more than 68.6MPa/m, the level of compaction changes when the embankment material is different. If the level of compaction is low, there is a possibility of embankment settlement, because of train load. So, it is necessary to study compaction management for preventing embankment settlement. For this reason, we sorted out the results of cyclic loading tests done in the past using the full scale models. The embankment materials for the full scale models are invariably sandy soil, but the compaction levels are different in all cases. This paper gives an outline of the relation thus established between compaction level and settlement of embankment.
