Diagnosis of Overhead Contact Line by Measuring the Behavior of Pantograph for
Current Collection

Hard spots of overhead contact line are diagnosed by electric inspection cars
on the narrow gage line in JR Group. But frequency of diagnosis is only 2 or 3
times per year. A more frequent diagnosis of contact line such as done by pantograph
for current collection on a commercial car is desirable. So a field test was carried
out using a pantograph equipped with sensors for current collection on electric
inspection cars. Thus it found the possibility of detecting undulatory wear in
acceleration of pantograph bow was confirmed. Similar diagnosing is conceivable
with the Shinkansen. Then a field test was carried out on electric inspection cars
for Shinkansen and it was found also possible to do similar pantograph measurement
and there by to do similar diagnosis.
