Ground Reaction Model Test for Shield Tunnel

To clarify the tunnel-ground interaction and difference of design method for shield tunnel, relatively large-scale model tests of shield tunnel are performed. Earth pressures acting on the model tunnel crown and invert are rather small in comparison with values obtained from those design methods. Consequently,some design methods are able to express the interaction of the model test result. Although some evaluated design methods assume structurally sufficient safety in shield tunnel design, the conventional design method in Japan sometimes is liable to give values on an excessively safe side.
