We carried out numerical simulations with a spring-mass model of a wheel passing over a transitional track stiffness region. An abrupt change of stiffness across two adjacent track portions often needs insertion of a buffer region to moderate it. A buffer region sometimes covers a couple of track portions an example showing how to decide the number of buffers and their stiffness, depending on relative track stiffnesses, train characteristics and speed.
