The development of the Maglev system using superconducting magnets was started in 1970. Since 1977, the Miyazaki test track has played a very important role in the research and development of the Maglev system. Now, the new Yamanashi test line just completed will be taking over this role. The running test will begin in the spring of 1997. The present state of Maglev development and the technical background are introduced here.
