Rolling Stock Performance of High Speed Train Ranked in 300km/h Class

Tomoki WATANABE

In design concept of high speed train performance once must consider more things as one did twenty years before. In applying induction motors as traction motors, powering and electric braking characteristics are determined not only by parameters of the induction motors but also by an inveter feeding them. Moreover since the inverter can not convert d.c. to an ideal value of a.c. so that one must be aware of harmonics generation and the like. The biggest change in recent high speed trains is their drastically reduced running resistance. The running resistance of series 500 Shinkansen train is almost half that of series 0 that has been used for many years as a calculation base. The latest Shinkansen trains are able to run at much higher speed of 300km/h consuming less power than series 0 Shinkansen trains and even high speed trains in other countries do.
