A lot of overhead contact poles were broken by the Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake which hit the Hanshin district. We carried out vibration tests on full size overhead contact poles (concrete poles and a steel pole) by using sinusoidal waves and the waves measured at the Kobe Marine Meteorological Observatory, and we confirmed that overhead contact poles were broken by resonance between poles and viaducts. Furthermore we carried out bending tests as well as vibration tests of poles and made it clear that the bending strength of the steel pole was greater than twice its design moment. This paper reports on results of these vibration and bending tests of overhead contact poles.
