A History of Materials for Railway Tunnel Lining in Japan

Shigeru ONODA

@In early days of railways in Japan, tunnel linings were generally made of bricks or masonry. But concrete or concrete block lining was introduced in the last years of Meiji Era (about 1910'), and brick or masonry lining was abandoned until the last years of Taisho Era (about 1920') for railway tunnels. To trace this process further back, I ransacked old records and field survey from a historical engineering point of view. Through this research, applications of each materials in those days were made clear, and some useful hints at maintenance work of railway tunnels were gained.
