Recently, various guiding systems for people visually handicapped have been developed. However, information provided by those systems is not sufficient and not necessarily appropriate to these customers. A system proposed in this paper utilizes the latest technology of data-carrier, mobile communication and portable computers. Data-carriers are installed on the platforms of stations, and so on. An encoded information is transferred to a reader built into the cane carried by a visually handicapped person. This information is interpreted by his or her portable computer, and the computer generates an appropriate guiding message. Finally, the message is conveyed to him or her by voice via a portable speaker.
