The Development of the Switch-and-Lock Movement for High-Speed Turnout (1:38)

Ikuo SAKURAI, Nobuyuki MATUMOTO

Hokuriku Shinkansen line opened in October 1997, just in time for the holding of the Olympics in Nagano. The biggest turnout in Japan is installed among the facilities of this Shinkansen. It allows the trains to pass into the branch line at 160km/h speed. However, because this high-speed turnout (1:38) is about 2.5 times as long as the conventional Shinkansen turnout, there were various problems to be cleared in the development of the switch-and-lock movement for this turnout and we solved those problems. This paper describes the problems and their solutions and reports on the test results and so on.
