Review of Traditional Ultrasonic Testing of Rolling Stock Axle

Jiro YOHSO, Takao NAGASE

The present standard of the technique, which was established in 1950s plays an important part for prevention of accidents. As the quality of axle materials has been improved; axle shapes have been changed; and instruments and the signal processing technique have been developed, technical innovation is important without persisting in the traditional technique. This paper discussed technical problems about the fundamental axle testing technique, the end-wise scan and the ultrasonic attenuation rate measurement based on test and investigation results.
