Latest Low-maintenance Tracks in Europe and America

Generally speaking, huge expenditures and labor and needed to maintain ballasted tracks of high speed lines under good condition. Therefore, the slab track was developed and laid on a large scale on Shinkansen lines as the standard track. In Europe and America, a number of different types of low-maintenance track have been developed and tested. Especially, the German Railway has installed new low-maintenance tracks on new lines to confirm the cost performance since 1990. This paper describes the present status of developing low-maintenance tracks in Europe and America.
