Development of Low Noise Pantograph Equipped with Passive Lift Suppression Mechanism at Panhead

Mitsuru IKEDA

To reduce wayside noise of train, we have been developing a low noise pantograph, which is composed of aerodynamically smooth members. The main theme of this study is to realize aerodynamic stability with low noise characteristics. We contrived a passive lift suppression mechanism for the panhead to prevent large lift force. This feature is to keep the panhead at a small angle of attack by means of passive rotation by aerodynamic force. This paper briefly describes an outline of this mechanism and the results of wind tunnel test performed to confirm its efficiency.
