Galvanized steel stranded wires are used for messenger wires in electric railways. Maintenance of these wires relies on a life-time management method, in which their replacement time is estimated by visual inspection and other methods. In the visual inspection method, we often commit mistakes in estimating their replacement time to cause wire breaks as a result. Following the development of a device to detect deterioration of hard-drawn aluminium stranded wires and a device to detect deterioration of hard-drawn copper stranded wires used for feeders, the demands are mounting for examining the detectability of deterioration of galvanized steel stranded wires. We found a detecting method for deterioration of wire having two material layers by eddy currents in basic researches. Investigation and test have been successfully executed to develop a device for detecting deterioration of galvanized steel stranded wires.
