Shape Optimization Analysis for Corrugated Wheels

Makoto AKAMA, Takehiko KIGAWA, Eiji KIMOTO

A shape optimization analysis for corrugated wheels was performed using the growth-strain method. The analysis consists of iteration of two steps. The first step is a stress analysis under the condition of severe drag braking using general purpose FEM codes. The second step is a growth-strain analysis based on the growth law. In this analysis, bulk strain develops in proportion to a deviation of the Mises equivalent stress from the average or permissible value in a plate part of the wheel. The resulting shape indicates that the maximum value of the stress generated in an improved wheel decreases considerably without an increase in weight when compared with that in the conventional wheel.
