Evaluation of Non-linear Earthquake Response of Bridges using Strength Demanded Spectra

Akihiko NISHIMURA, Yoshitaka MURONO

It is necessary to calculate non-linear response in the design of structures against large scale earthquakes. We propose a practical method to evaluate the response of structures instead of detailed analysis such as non-linear dynamic response analysis. The method applies "Strength Demanded Spectra". The chart of Strength Demanded Spectra illustrates the relation between the period and demanded strength of structures for each response ductility µ. In this paper, we investigate the sensitivity of some parameters influencing on the spectra, such as the damping factor and the hysteresis model. Then, reasonable conditions and a method to make the Strength Demanded Spectrum for railway bridges are introduced.
