RTRI REPORT March 1999

Earthquake-Resistant Performance and Design Method for Foundation

Shiro TANAMURA, Akihiko NISHIMURA

To set the foundation stability level that represents the earthquake-resistant performance of structure, it is important to evaluate the bearing capacity and displacement of foundation due to earthquakes. The foundation stability level is determined to reflect the degree of influence of foundation damage on the structure or difficulty of restoration after an earthquake. These factors are dependent, however, on the strength and deformation characteristics of subsoil that supports the foundation and the strength and ductility of the members composing the foundation. This report shows a basic concept on the earthquake-resistant performance of foundation and introduces the methods to calculate the response value and confine the safety of foundation in earthquake-resistant design.
