A committee was organized to make a model code for seismic design of railway structures after the Hyogo-ken Nanbu Earthquake. A new model code prepared based on the result of discussions by the committee has been established to adopt a performance based design. This paper describes the keynote of the new code for seismic design of bridges. The new model code was released by the Ministry of Transport, Japan, in 1998.
