In the conventional traction motor drive system of commuter electric vehicles, the torque of traction motor is transmitted to the wheel-set via the flexible coupling and a reduction gear system. As a drive system for the next-generation commuter trains, we have been promoting research and development on a direct drive traction motor system without the conventional driving gear. We manufactured three types of experimental traction motors and tested on the JR EAST Yokosuka Line. This report introduces on-board and wayside noise measurements results of the test vehicle.
