We have been studying the application of permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) for railway vehicle traction to reduce the weight and size of direct drive traction motor. As a part of this study, it is essential to establish a drive system of PMSM suitable for railway vehicle traction. In this paper, we discuss the drive system to control PMSM and suggest a current control method which is available under the condition of railway vehicle traction, low switching frequency in a inverter and long digital calculating period.
