In 1985, a newly developed earthing resistor was introduced into 0 series Shinkansen EMUs for the first time in order to reduce abnormal wear to of earth brush and to equalize the voltage distribution over the entire train set. Vehicles have reduced the number of pantagraphs which are connected each other with a ultra-high-voltage cables to reduce noise in running. Therefore, the surge generated when the pantagraphs are lifted remains on the car body and adversely affects devices of low isolation. We measured the impedance of present device and developed a new low induction type earthing resistor mainly for use at 100kHz. This paper summarizes the development.
