This paper proposes an experimental approach to estimate radio propagation characteristics along railway lines, for mobile communications such as the train radio system. Radio propagation experiments were carried out between wayside points and a train to grasp the characteristics in urban and suburban areas and the effects on overbridges, river bridges and embankments. We estimated the propagation loss through calculations based on the technique in A133 reported by the Office for Research and Experiments (ORE) and confirmed the effectiveness of this approach. Moreover, we introduced a multiwave model into the calculation of propagation loss in order to improve the accuracy and compared it with experiment results.
