Over track buildings have specific structural characteristics in that they don't have footing beams. They are functionally important buildings used by an unspecified number of passengers while trains running thereunder. Then, a rational seismic retrofit method for existing station buildings was proposed in consideration of the earthquake damage conditions those of Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. It uses brace-type hysteresis dampers arranged at beam-column corners. Through various experiments and numerical value analyses, it was confirmed that the proposed method improves the building performance against earthquakes, based on which a manual was drafted as a guideline to reinforcement design.
