Behavior of Adhesion Foce and Generating Wheel Tread Coarseness by Sliding

Katsutoshi KAYASHIMA, Izumi HASEGAWA

The adhesion force between wheel tread and rail governs the brake performance of rolling stock. Therefore, wheels slide when the adhesion force decreases under the influence of rainfall. This requires an anti-skid device. To reduce the braking distance, researches are promoted in recent years to utilize the adhesion force by wheel slide readhesive control. We performed bench tests to measure the changes in the wheel tread coarseness and adhesion force when wheels slide to investigate the relation between these two factors. Based on the test results, we discussed the best method of slide control.
