History and Future of Brake Systems for Rolling Stock

Izumi HASEGAWA

In this paper, I outline the history and future of brake systems used for rolling stock. First, I describe the historic background of the conditions necessary for brake systems. Second, I divided the brake system into two parts, a control system and a power system for the convenience of explanation. Nowadays the main stream of the control system for braking is an electric command system, but I expect the control system for braking will be unified in the future with a train driving system and monitoring system. On the other hand, the pneumatic system and the electric system used for supplying power to braking systems will be continuously used in the future.
