Recent Trends in the Studies of Railway Noise and Railway Aerodynamics

Tatsuo MAEDA

Railway noise and aerodynamic phenomena become more dominant as trains run at higher speeds. Accordingly, it is indispensable to reduce the effects of these phenomena to raise train speeds and realize environment-friendly railways. This paper describes recent trends in the studies of railway noise and railway aerodynamics at the Environmental Engineering Division of RTRI. The study of railway noise consists of a method of analyzing railway noise, development of an acoustic mirror microphone and evaluation of aerodynamic noise of trains. The study of railway aerodynamics consists of tunnel sonic booms, pressure variation due to train passing, unsteady aerodynamic forces on trains in a tunnel and other related phenomena.
